My name is Ray Young Bear. I collect and assemble words from a second language, which is English.
My first language is Meskwaki.
This column will be used primarily to share the creative writing process from the viewpoint of a Native American, in the Midwest, of Iowa.
I am 73, I live on the Meskwaki Settlement in central Iowa. I’ve been writing since 1968, with six books published to date—three more are in progress.
I intend to create a culture-sharing exchange for the purpose of offering insights into the Meskwaki culture which is different from the typical American culture.
I believe in the concept of animism: things in nature are alive and capable of speech and feeling.
For example, I see nature as a church, wherein the trees, rocks, rivers, animals and birds are part of the belief system.
In future columns, join me as I articulate the differences and similarities between our cultures from yesterday and today.
I am honored to be a of the Iowa Writers’ Collaborative. Please join us:
What a breath of fresh air to be able to hear the voice hear from someone who will transcend our globalized, electronic 21st Century and teach the value of the of land. I’m excited that there will be be columns from a Meskwaki tribesman to enrich my understanding of Iowa, it’s native people, and reflect upon our world in a different way. I hope to learn much.
Welcome!
